Automatic Driving Lessons in Southall: The Broadway, Norwood Green & Lady Margaret

In Southall we teach in automatic cars. The Broadway’s bus lanes, double-parked vans and people crossing between them are a lot to take in on your first drives, and an automatic leaves your attention on the road rather than on the clutch. Your instructor picks you up from home, work or college anywhere in UB1 and UB2.

A first two-hour lesson costs £75 when you have never sat behind the wheel (£85 with some lessons already). Type your UB1 or UB2 postcode into our guided booking to see who covers your street and when they are free.

What learning in Southall teaches you

Southall packs a busy high street, a dangerous junction for pedestrians and a fast dual carriageway into a couple of miles. Each one trains a habit the examiner looks for.

The Broadway and Uxbridge Road

The Broadway is Southall’s spine: buses, delivery vans stopping where they shouldn’t, and shoppers stepping out between them. Ealing Council enforces the bus lanes and parking here by camera, so you learn to read the times on the blue lane signs, check your mirrors before every move and hold your position calmly when a bus pulls away from a stop.

High Street at Avenue Road

The London Cycling Campaign’s analysis of 2018–22 collision records ranked this junction on Uxbridge Road among the worst in London for people on foot. It is where we practise slow, early approaches, covering the brake and scanning both pavements before you commit.

The Parkway (A312) and White Hart roundabout

Head north on the A312 and the pace changes: a dual carriageway to Yeading and Northolt, and the multi-lane White Hart roundabout. Picking your lane by your exit and judging gaps in faster traffic is exactly what a test from Southall or Yeading asks of you.

20mph streets and School Streets

Ealing has brought its own roads down to 20mph, and its School Streets close to traffic at drop-off and pick-up, enforced by camera. Satnav won’t warn you, so your instructor shows you how to spot the signs before you turn in.

Your driving test

Southall test centre, in DVSA’s own numbers

Southall’s test centre is on Allenby Road, UB1. It is one of the harder centres near us, and it is worth knowing why before you book.

44.8%
pass rate, April 2025 to March 2026

Below the Great Britain figure of 50.0%. Women passed 40.8% of their tests here.

41.7%
automatic pass rate

Lower than Southall’s manual pass rate of 46.7%. An automatic is easier to learn in, not an easier test.

5.4 weeks
median wait, September 2026

But a third of the people tested that month (34%) had waited more than 21 weeks, and it changes month to month.

What we do about it: your instructor plans a mock test on the roads around Allenby Road, and we tell you straight when you are ready rather than when the date arrives. Nearby, Yeading passed 52.8% in the same year. Since 9 June 2026 you can only move a test to one of the three centres nearest the one you booked, so choose the centre you mean to use. Southall’s full figures are on our Southall test centre page. All nine centres are compared on our test centres page.

Learning without a car at home

About four in ten households in Southall’s central wards have no car or van (Census 2021). If there is no family car to practise in, your lessons are your practice, so we plan them in steady two-hour blocks and use your student portal to show exactly what to work on next.

Common questions

Driving lessons in Southall: FAQs

Is Southall driving test centre hard?

Its pass rate is below average. In April 2025 to March 2026 Southall passed 44.8% of car tests, against 50.0% across Great Britain (DVSA). That says more about preparation than luck: we plan a mock test on the roads around Allenby Road and only suggest booking once you are passing mocks.

Is an automatic test easier to pass in Southall?

No. In 2025/26 Southall’s automatic pass rate was 41.7% and its manual pass rate 46.7% (DVSA). Learn in an automatic because it lets you concentrate on the road and usually takes fewer lessons to feel in control, not because the test is easier.

Can I move my Southall test to another centre?

Only to one of the three test centres nearest Southall, since 9 June 2026, and you get two changes per booking. Nearby centres include Yeading, Greenford and Isleworth. The DVSA’s rules are on gov.uk; our test centres page compares the figures.

Can my instructor book my driving test for me?

Not any more. Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book, change or cancel a car test. Add your instructor’s reference number when you book so they are free on the day; ask your WLDS instructor for theirs.

Do you teach manual lessons in Southall?

Not at the moment. Every instructor who covers UB1 and UB2 teaches in an automatic car. If you specifically need a manual licence, message us on WhatsApp and we will see whether a manual instructor nearby can take you.

How much are automatic driving lessons in Southall?

£47.50 an hour, always in two-hour lessons. A complete beginner’s first lesson is £75 and a returning learner’s is £85; after that each two-hour lesson is £95, or less when you buy a block.
