The A5 and the A404 are fast, signalised, multi-lane arterials feeding the Westway and the Marylebone Flyover. Choosing your lane early, reading the signals and holding your nerve in heavy traffic are learned here — both are red routes, so there is nowhere to stop and think.
Blomfield Road, Maida Avenue and the streets around Warwick Avenue are narrow, one-lane and often parked solid, with the old canal bridges to cross. Judging width, meeting oncoming cars and reversing with patience are learned here, all at low speed.
The numbered avenues off the Harrow Road and the residential grid around Elgin and Sutherland Avenue are calm, 20mph streets — the calm place to get the first lessons and the manoeuvres right before the arterials.
