Driving in UB6 & UB5

What learning around Greenford teaches you

The A40 runs straight through this patch, so learners here meet big roundabouts, fast slip roads and bus-lane cameras early. These four places matter most.

The Greenford roundabout under the A40

Greenford Road meets the A40 at a multi-lane roundabout beneath the flyover. Getting into the right lane for your exit before you arrive, and holding it all the way round, is the skill learners most often need extra time on here.

Joining and leaving the A40

The slip roads at Perivale, Greenford, the Target roundabout and the Polish War Memorial put you straight into fast traffic. We practise matching speed on the slip, checking the blind spot and merging without stopping.

The Polish War Memorial junction

Where the A40 meets West End Road by RAF Northolt. TfL cut the speed limit on the off-slip from 70mph to 30mph after a run of injury collisions, so reading the speed signs as you leave a fast road is part of every lesson that comes this way.

Greenford Broadway and the bus lanes

Greenford Broadway, Ruislip Road and Mandeville Road in Northolt carry buses, parked cars and camera-enforced bus lanes that have caught out thousands of drivers. Read the times on every lane sign and you will never pay that fine.

Greenford or Yeading? What DVSA’s figures say

Greenford’s test centre is on Horsenden Lane North, by Perivale. Yeading, the centre for Northolt and Hayes, is a short drive west. They could hardly be more different.

41.4%
Greenford pass rate, April 2025 to March 2026

Against 50.0% across Great Britain. Women passed 36.9% of their tests there, men 44.0%. 45% of its tests are in an automatic.

52.8%
Yeading pass rate, same year

Up from 46.9% the year before, with an automatic pass rate of 51.9%.

18.4 weeks
Greenford median wait, September 2026

45% of the people tested that month had waited more than 21 weeks. Yeading’s median that month was 3 weeks.

A pass rate is about the people taking the test as much as the route, so we never promise a centre will be easier. What we do: practise the junctions on Greenford’s routes until they are routine, and help you choose a centre before you book, because since 9 June 2026 a test can only move to one of the three centres nearest the one you booked. Greenford’s full figures are on our Greenford test centre page. All nine centres are on our test centres page.

The rules: L-plates, insurance that covers you, and a supervisor who is at least 21 and has held a full licence for three years (gov.uk). Common questions

Driving lessons in Greenford & Northolt: FAQs

Why is Greenford test centre’s pass rate so low?

DVSA doesn’t say, and nobody can tell you for certain. What the figures show is that it has been below the national rate for years: 41.4% from April 2025 to March 2026, against 50.0% across Great Britain. The practical answer is to arrive ready: confident on the A40 roundabouts and slip roads, and passing mock tests first.

Should I book my test at Greenford or Yeading?

Book where you can realistically get to and where you will practise the roads. Yeading passed 52.8% in 2025/26 and Greenford 41.4%, but the centre you book first now matters more: since 9 June 2026 you can only move a test to one of the three centres nearest it. Talk it through with your instructor before you book.

If I pass in an automatic, can I drive a manual?

No. An automatic test gives you a licence for automatic cars only. To drive a manual you would need to pass a manual test. Most learners in Greenford who choose automatic are happy with that trade, and 45% of tests at Greenford are now in an automatic.

Can I practise in my parents’ car between lessons?

Yes, with L-plates, insurance that covers you as a learner, and a supervisor aged 21 or over who has held a full licence for three years. Practise in the same type of car you will test in.

How much do automatic lessons cost in Greenford and Northolt?

£75 for a first two hours as a complete beginner, £85 if you have had lessons, and £95 for a standard two-hour lesson after that. Blocks bring the hourly price down.
