Is learning automatic the right call?

Here is the honest version, because it is the one question worth getting right before you spend any money. Automatic removes about a third of what a learner has to think about, and in London traffic that matters more than almost anywhere. The trade-off is real too, and we would rather you heard it from us.

Automatic suits you if…

— You drive mostly in London, where a clutch is worked hardest in stop-start traffic.
— You have tried manual lessons and the gears are where it keeps going wrong.
— You want to be test-ready sooner, with fewer things to master first.
— Nerves are your main obstacle. Taking gear changes away frees you to watch the road.
— The car you will actually drive is an automatic, a hybrid or electric — every fully electric car is automatic.
— A condition or injury makes constant clutch and gear work uncomfortable.

The one catch, stated plainly

Pass your test in an automatic and your licence covers automatic cars only. You would not be able to drive a manual on it — hire cars, a friend’s car, or a job that provides a manual van.

That is not permanent. You can add manual to your licence at any point by taking a manual test later, and plenty of people do exactly that once they are already a confident driver.
