Is learning automatic the right call?

Here is the honest version, because it is the one question worth getting right before you spend any money. Automatic removes about a third of what a learner has to think about, and in London traffic that matters more than almost anywhere. The trade-off is real too, and we would rather you heard it from us.

Automatic suits you if…

— You drive mostly in London, where a clutch is worked hardest in stop-start traffic.
— You have tried manual lessons and the gears are where it keeps going wrong.
— You want to be test-ready sooner, with fewer things to master first.
— Nerves are your main obstacle. Taking gear changes away frees you to watch the road.
— The car you will actually drive is an automatic, a hybrid or electric — every fully electric car is automatic.
— A condition or injury makes constant clutch and gear work uncomfortable.

The one catch, stated plainly

Pass your test in an automatic and your licence covers automatic cars only. You would not be able to drive a manual on it — hire cars, a friend’s car, or a job that provides a manual van.

That is not permanent. You can add manual to your licence at any point by taking a manual test later, and plenty of people do exactly that once they are already a confident driver.

An hour in London traffic barely gets you started. Two hours is long enough to leave the busy streets, practise something properly, and go over it again before you finish.

Plenty of schools charge more for automatic because they have fewer automatic cars. We do not. It is £47.50 an hour whichever you learn in, and every rate is published before you spend anything.

Automatic driving lessons — FAQs

Can I drive a manual car if I pass my test in an automatic?

No. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, so you can drive automatics, hybrids and electric cars, but not a manual. You can add manual later by taking a manual practical test — you do not start over, and there is no extra theory test.

Are automatic driving lessons more expensive?

Not with us. Automatic is £47.50 an hour, exactly the same as manual, taught in 2-hour lessons (£95). Your first lesson is £75 if you are new to driving on a UK provisional, or £85 if you have had lessons before. Many schools do add an automatic premium, so it is worth checking that when you compare.

How many automatic lessons will I need?

Learners usually need fewer lessons in an automatic than in a manual, because clutch control and gear changes are a large part of what takes time to master. How many is genuinely personal — it depends on how often you practise and how much road experience you already have. Any school quoting you an exact number before meeting you is guessing. Your instructor will give you an honest read after a few lessons, and you can see your own progress against the syllabus in your student portal.

Is the automatic driving test easier?

It is the same DVSA test, the same routes, the same manoeuvres and the same standard of driving. What changes is that there are no gear-related faults to pick up — no stalling, no rolling back on a hill start. The observation, planning and road positioning being marked are identical.

I keep failing at gears in manual. Should I switch to automatic?

It is a common and sensible switch, and it is not giving up. If the gears are the thing standing between you and a licence, moving to automatic often gets people driving in weeks rather than months — and everything else you have learned still counts. Tell us where you have got to and we will pick up from there rather than starting you again.

Are electric cars automatic?

Yes — every fully electric car is an automatic, and an automatic licence covers all of them. If the car you expect to own next is electric or hybrid, learning automatic is not a compromise, it is the licence that fits.
