Having the confidence to join a busy motorway can honestly be tricky — even for drivers who have already passed their test. The good news is that motorway driving is a skill like any other: with the right instruction, in the right car, it becomes routine surprisingly quickly.
Can learners drive on motorways?
Yes. Since 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales have been allowed on motorways — as long as they are accompanied by an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a car fitted with dual controls. That is exactly how our motorway lessons run: you are never on the motorway without a qualified instructor beside you and a second set of pedals in the car.
Why motorways feel harder than they are
Statistically, motorways are among the safest roads in the country — everyone travels in the same direction, there are no junctions to cross and no oncoming traffic. What makes them feel intimidating is speed and commitment: joining from a slip road means matching the speed of traffic that is not going to stop for you. That judgement — reading the gap, building speed, merging smoothly — is the core skill a motorway lesson teaches.
What a motorway lesson covers
- Joining and leaving safely using slip roads
- Overtaking and correct lane discipline — including staying out of the middle lane when you are not overtaking
- Judging safe following distances at 70 mph
- Reading overhead gantries, smart motorway signals and red X closures
- What to do in a breakdown, and how to use emergency areas
When to take one
Most learners take motorway lessons late in their course, once they are comfortable at dual-carriageway speeds. For full licence holders, a motorway session is one of the fastest confidence boosts there is — especially if you passed your test years ago and have been avoiding the M4 or M25 ever since.
Our Motorway Package is a three-hour session with a DVSA-qualified instructor in a dual-controlled car, starting from West London. If you would like to talk it through first, message us on WhatsApp on 07507 594 824 — or book online whenever you are ready.
